Positive News for BD RMG Sector's

Buyers Increase Their Orders

In spite of uncertain state of the global economy, EU crisis-Positive news for Bangladeshi RMG sector that buyers have noticeably increased their orders in 2012.

According local news papers articles (i.e. www.thedailystar.net) in this year many clothing retailers have increased their order volumes 15%-25% from Bangladesh.

Competitive price, improvement in labour laws/skills+ upgraded production facilities are the main reasons behind that.

Chairman and managing director of Viyellatex Group, gave an statement on local news paper as “The orders from the European buyers are increasing and it will be higher once the Eurozone financial crisis looks to be under control” He also mentioned that mainly cited a recent jump in sportswear orders from Euro Zone, thanks to the European Football Championships and the Olympic Games. This comes as a bonus chance for the garment sector of Bangladesh. EU comprises 55% annual export volumes of this sector’s.

This RMG sector has been unable to achieve the export targets for the past few fiscal years. Climate change has been also responsible by shortened the winter period. Shorter winters or longer summers, increase the volume of woven items decrease the knitwear volume.

By raking in $9.60 billion in fiscal 2011-12 woven items just about met its target the previous fiscal year, exceeding it by 0.45%. But knitwear missed 12.16 % its export target, fetching $9.49 billion - According Export Promotion Bureau.

Owing to major upgrades in production facilities, Bangladesh can now compete in the higher segment of the garment market.

Beside major upgrades in production facilities, eroding price has played into Bangladesh's advantage competitive of China-the world's largest apparel supplying country.

A Spanish buyer who preferred to remain unnamed told “The Daily Star” (A local News Paper)-“As the country has become a decent, competitive sourcing option-almost all international giant retailers are increasing their purchase volumes from Bangladesh,”

Political stability, sufficient gas and power supply to the industrial units, strong political relationship with major economies, exploiting the new destinations seriously to attract new buyers can continue higher export growth.

RMG Exports to the EU have slowed due to the debt crisis.

Readymade Garment exports from Bangladesh to its largest destination in the Euro-zone have been facing a slowdown as the cautious EU buyers are deferring or placing reduced number of orders due to debt crisis there, said major exporters.

With the persistent crisis in Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal, the overall purchasing power of the consumers in the entire Euro-zone has also declined.

Apart from a demand drop, the buyers are also offering lower prices is the another reason.

By offering duty-free benefits, more than 60% of Bangladesh's garment items go to the EU -the main market for Bangladesh.

Garment exporters are now focusing on the recently-explored markets such as Japan, China, India, Russia, South Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, Brazil and South Africa. They are also increasing dependency on the US market due to the shrinking orders from the EU buyers.

Bangladesh exported garments worth $10.28 billion to the EU in the first eleven months of the current fiscal year, 10.06 % higher from $9.24 billion in the same period last year (Source : Export Promotion Bureau-EPB)

According to the EPB, of the total amount earned during the period, $6.27 billion came from knitwear and $4.01 billion from woven items from the EU-27, which is the European Union of 27 member states

The total amount of knitwear exports was at $8.58 billion and woven earned $8.70 billion- during the July-May period of the current fiscal year. The overall growth in the two segments was 46.35 % in the first 11 months of last fiscal year for the EU-27 countries.

The garment makers said the number of orders is declining and in some cases the buyers are deferring orders for one or two months to observe the situation. The situation in June last year was better than this June, they said, adding that the second spell of recession is taking a toll on exports.

The European major retailers are now selling products at handsome discounts-consequence the buyers are offering the discount rates for the Bangladeshi products as well, affecting their profitability.

The impact of discount sales in the EU is pulling down the prices of exportable garments products of Bangladesh.
However, due to the upcoming Olympic Games in London, exports of some products such as sportswear from Bangladesh to the EU market increased to some extent. Similarly, garment export to Germany is still going strong riding on a good economic condition there.

Mr. Ahsan Kabir Khan, managing director of Gazipur-based Interfab Shirts Manufacturing Ltd. said-
“The hope is that the buyers' sentiment is still very positive about Bangladesh as the prices of garment items in China have gone up due to higher cost of production,” As a strategy, the company has already started exporting garment items to China and South Africa to reduce dependency on the EU.

“It's a backup. I have taken preparations so that my exports are not hampered,” he said. But, the EU buyers are deferring orders by one or two months, which has affected the company's total export earnings, he added.

He said, a few months ago a major EU clothing brand, which outsources from his company, reduced its annual buying quantity as a temporary measure.

Of his total $42 million exports last year, 65 % were sent to the EU.

“We are also diversifying our products so that exports remain unhurt during any financial meltdown,” he said. If the crisis in the EU prolongs, the makers have the ready markets in India, China and South Korea, he added.

Shahriar Alam, managing director of Interstoff Apparels Ltd, said exports to the EU have slowed due to the debt crisis. “The buyers are now taking a lot of time to place orders,” said Alam who sends 80 % of his products to the EU.

Interstoff Apparels Ltd-Now exploring new export destinations such as Japan, China and Korea.

Abdullah Al Mahmud Mahin-Managing Director of Mahin Group said the country's apparel industry has a bright prospect as the buyers are still flocking here. He sees the EU crisis as a temporary problem for the industry.
